General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to install, repair and restore power. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Training and Experience:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in lineman training or related field. Requires two years of line work experience or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Commercial (Class A) Drivers License

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of municipal electric utilities services and related methods of installation, operation and maintenance, including electrical power distribution.
• Knowledge of the machinery, materials and supplies required for daily overhead and underground electrical installations, maintenance and operations.
• Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Ability to troubleshoot and analyze system performance and take necessary steps to ensure the provision of reliable, safe and uninterrupted utility service for customers.
• Ability to perform well and react calmly in dangerous and/or emergency situations.Ability to perform required field work, including climbing power poles.
• Ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to extreme heat/cold, harsh weather conditions, odors, smoke, noise, wetness, humidity, electric currents, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, dusts, vibrations, working at heights, etc.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
• Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
• Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Performs skilled, technical work in the construction, maintenance and emergency repair of overhead and underground electric systems.
2. Maintains electrical distribution system, performing such duties as changing crossarms, repairing transformers, setting/replacing poles, changing lightning arrestors, changing insulators, etc.
3. Locates and repairs cable faults; restores power.
4. Installs new primary and secondary lines, framing and setting new poles, installing underground lines, setting underground transformers and switches, framing, and setting security and streetlight poles, hanging new transformers, installing metering equipment, etc.
5. Stocks trucks; performs housekeeping; fills out work orders and outage reports; performs job briefings and switches orders.
6. Completes truck reports and monthly reports for tools.
7. Prepares maintenance/repair reports and records, work orders, trouble tickets, etc.
8. Trains subordinates to complete tasks safely.
9. Observes crew members at work to ensure safety is of utmost importance.
10. Works in an environment with weather extremes to include hot, cold, rain, sleet, snow, wind, lightning, storms, arc flashes, etc. Works in traffic, confined spaces, etc. Pulls rotating call out duty.
11. Performs related work as assigned.
