What you will do:Β 
As a Corporate Income Tax Auditor, you will conduct audits of books, records, and tax returns of large multi-state corporations doing business in South Carolina for SC corporate income taxes and license fees. Β You will analyze federal and SC corporate income tax returns, as well as returns from banks and savings and loan institutions. You will complete audit write-ups, work papers, proposed assessments, and work with Appeals and Litigation supporting audit positions and adjustments.

Primary job duties include:Β 
  • Learning audit issues, work papers, and applicable authority.Β 
  • Participating in team and independent audits of large multi-state corporations to verify the accuracy of returns.Β 
  • Preparing delinquent returns, as necessary, for non-filers to ensure compliance with SC corporate income and license fee tax laws. Β Β 
  • Assisting in preparing and submitting professional audit reports, which include a detail of the basis and justification for proposed taxpayer audit adjustments. Β 
  • Explaining audit results to taxpayers and their representatives in a clear and professional manner. Β 
  • Reviewing tax returns, company filing history, financial statements, and other related information to identify underreported income and potential audit issues for the purposes of audit selection. Β 
  • Completing research and training to improve audit skills and knowledge related to corporate income tax law and returns. Β Β 
  • Note: Most audits are conducted electronically; however, you can travel for field work out-of-state for some audits if you prefer. Each audit is different, and you have the opportunity to learn different industries. You also have the delegation to determine your audit schedule. SCDOR offers a flexible work schedule. Β 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Either:

  • A bachelor’s degree and four years of professional experience in accounting, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis ORΒ 
  • A bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis with 12 hours of accounting
Additional requirement:Β 
  • A valid Driver’s LicenseΒ

Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning. Β 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration with a minimum of 18 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects
  • Four (4) years of professional work experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation/analysisΒ 
  • Professional work experience in tax auditing
  • Professional work experience in corporate taxΒ 
  • Professional experience working with a CPA firmΒ 
  • Considerable knowledge of accounting principles, methods, procedures and their application to the South Carolina Tax Acts and Regulations Β

  • Hours: Flexible hours may be available from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).
  • Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week.
