Description

The City of Aiken is accepting applications for an Engineering Technician to join our Engineering & Utilities Department. 

Examples of Duties

  • Responsible for inspecting Backflow Prevention Devices to ensure they comply with local and state regulations and standards. This position plays a crucial role in preventing cross contamination of water supplies and safeguarding public health
  • Conduct visual inspections of backflow devices for proper installation and signs of damage
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, tests, and maintenance activities for compliance and reporting purposes
  • Interact with property owners, contractors, plumbers, and regulatory agencies
  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing customer's inquiries, explaining the importance of backflow prevention, and offering guidance on maintaining compliance
  • Provides construction inspection activity on behalf of the City during construction phase of City and Developer projects. This may include participating with: witnesses testing, inspecting work in progress, final inspections, and final acceptance
  • Ensures contractors follow plans and specifications as to type and condition of materials, location, and grade of various structures
  • Interfaces with engineering design firms during the design phase to respond to questions and comment to assure City needs are met
  • Reviews as built drawings of completed work that reflects the actual final configuration
  • Prepares reports, papers, and other documents appropriate to the department; maintains and updates records and manuals as needed
  • Also provides assistance to other Engineering and Utilities department staff as needed
Other Responsibilities:
  • Stays informed of state and national backflow regulations
  • Prepares reports, assessments, and inspection as required
  • Performs other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate level degree or higher, or equivalent technical training with two years experience in utilities construction, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • 2-4 years experience in civil construction activity and inspection reviews. Experience should cover roads, storm water conveyance, water systems, and sewage systems (desired)
  • Must hold the SCDHEC backflow certification. Obtain the Program Administration certification.
