Job Responsibilities

Originally a military compound and later a trading post, Oconee Station State Historic Site offers both recreational opportunities and a unique look at 18th and 19th century South Carolina. Oconee Station, a stone blockhouse used as an outpost by the S.C. State Militia from about 1792 to 1799, and the William Richards House, are the only two structures that remain today.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Β Oversees and assists in research, protection, preservation, and maintenance of onsite historic facilities and park grounds. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes park managerial responsibilities in the absence of the Park Manager and Assistant Park Manager, Oconee State Park.

1) Conducts cultural, natural, and historical research in areas relative to Oconee Station and Oconee Town to enhance its interpretation and management of its resources.
2) Assists with other park operational functions, maintenance, and other duties as directed by park management.
3) Plans, promotes and conducts tours, programs, workshops and activities for the park visitor through personal contact, self interpretation material, oral and written communications for Oconee Station State Historic Site and Oconee State Park.
4) Conducts administrative activities to include, but not limited to: Collection and accounting for revenue. retail and inventory, park and procurement expenditures, and produce required reports in accordance with park and agency guidelines and procedures.
5) Prepares required administrative reports and maintains records related to visitation, cataloging and inventory of specimens, special programs and artifacts etc.
6) Develops, plans and constructs interpretation exhibits or signage in order to tell the story of Oconee Station State Historic Site, Oconee State Park, and Oconee Town. Provides maintenance and upkeep of new and existing exhibits and their facilities.
7) Practice and promote teamwork within Oconee and Oconee Station state Parks, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Masters in public history, American history, museum studies, historic preservation or a related field; or a Bachelors Degree in previously listed fields and one year experience at historic sites or museums.

Additional Requirements:

1) Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
2) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, bending, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Works with office equipment such as computers, calculators, etc., as well as grounds equipment such as lawnmower, chainsaw, etc. Requires flexible work schedule to include weekends and holidays.
3) Must possess a valid driver's license.

Actual Job Location: Oconee Station State Historic Site.


Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.

Position offers optional residency in agency provided housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response. If park-provided housing is chosen, the employee will be required to sign a residency agreement, which outlines the expectations for rent and utilities which will be deducted each pay period.
