ABOUT NCEES

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and surveyors. NCEES staff members develop, administer, and score the examinations used for engineering and surveying licensure in the United States. We also promote uniformity of the U.S. licensure processes through services for our member licensing boards and licensees. We are proud to promote excellence in all we do.

ABOUT OUR POSITION

As an exam editor, you will be responsible for managing NCEES exam content through all stages of development, including being an active participant in exam development meetings with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), editing and proofreading exam items and related materials, and reviewing finished exams for functionality and any other issues.

The primary duties and responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Communicating with SMEs and exam production staff to ensure copy and supporting metadata are clear, concise, and correct
  • Assisting SMEs during development and review of exam content during item-writing workshops
  • Reviewing and performing substantive revisions to exams and exam content to ensure consistency and correct usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • Ensuring that copy and diagrams are written and formatted in accordance with NCEES standards and The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Using word processing and Web-based software to edit copyΒ 
  • Assisting in maintaining style sheets, copyright records, schedules, and other project documentation
  • Coordinating with internal and external teams and tracking project status throughout the production process to meet deadlines

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You’ll need to have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in English or related field and 3 years of related experience
  • Extensive knowledge of English grammar, composition, and style
  • Ability to edit technical and non-technical materials for publication according to accepted usage and standards
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Forms), and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in software and procedures
  • Ability to work with databases and Web-based software
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/XML and simple coding
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Ability to work well under deadline pressure
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to conduct research quickly and accurately
  • Ability to work occasional overtime and Saturday hours
  • Effective communication skills, oral and written
