Description

Under the direction of the Health and Wellness Director and consistent with the Christian mission, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for the safety, supervision, and instruction of group exercise to facility members.

Β 

Principal Activities:

  • Responsible for starting and ending class on time
  • Responsible for providing a safe class format, including all pertinent components of fitness
  • Responsible for attending training workshops and staff meetings
  • Responsible for providing music and choreography, abiding by the music and CEC policies
  • Willingness to serve as part of the health and fitness team by assisting with departmental special events in an effort to promote themselves, class and program
  • Responsible for finding a replacement if unable to teach and to alert the Group Exercise Coordinator immediately.
  • Responsible for maintaining an excellent rapport with members and/or class participants
  • Responsible for maintaining a high level of motivation and positive energy
  • Responsible for continuing one’s own personal growth and education
  • Assist with maintaining immaculate facilities by performing routine cleaning and returning items to proper storage areas
  • Responsible for recording accurate class records
  • Responsible for maintaining 75% monthly instructor attendance rate

Qualifications

Know-How:

  • 2-4 years experience as group exercise instructor
  • Ability to teach multiple formats desired
  • Must have cycle, yoga, aquatics, Pilates, or Zumba specific certification if teaching those specialty classes
  • Must be CPR/AED and First Aid certified within 60 days of hire
  • Knowledge in physiology and aerobic conditioning
  • Must have excellent human relation skills
  • Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities
  • Must work independently with little supervision
  • Must be customer service oriented

  • Viewed by members and participants as being helpful and supportive
  • Positive attitude and enthusiastic performance of duties.
  • Scoring a β€œcompetent” or higher on mid-year and end-year evaluations
  • Continued growth in education of one’s self
  • Maintaining a 4.0 on all member evaluations of class/instructor
  • Steady growth and retention of overall facility membership and specific participation in all department(s)/ programs and activities.
  • Assuring clean & well-maintained department(s) equipment and facilities.
  • Assuring Safety & liability of programs/staff/participants.
  • Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent of which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the overall goals of the Sumter Family YMCA.
