Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Operates motorized equipment on a county maintenance Work Request Crew. Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium sized equipment such as belt loaders, larger (> 4 tons) rollers, skid steer, tractor and trailer mounted injection patcher, tractor with batwing 15β mowers, and combination tractor with side mounted mowers in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations.
Performs skilled manual labor in various duties as patching roadway base and surface failures, cleaning ditches and placing sideline and crossline pipe, installing driveways; removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on right-of-way, performing vegetation management to improve visibility of signage; installing, repairing, and maintaining flat sheet signs, extruded panel signs, sign assemblies, and sign foundations; and setting forms and pouring and finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other activities related to work request activities and multipurpose operations. Operates tandem dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations.
In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, operates heavier equipment such as a front-end loader, motor graders, backhoes, specialized slope mowers and specialized equipment for cleaning out drainage ditches, installing sideline and crossline pipe, and bridge repairs with various levels of formal and informal training. Operates and maintains powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance related to assigned tasks such as tree and vegetation removal, cleaning pipes and ditches, concrete sidewalk and gutter repair and maintenance, limb trimming, weed eating, facility maintenance, litter and dead animal removal, etc., and other activities related to maintenance operations.
Conducts safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; available for on-call rotations and extended hours or extended shift operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Six (6) months of related work experience. Relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operatorβs license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
