Job Responsibilities


Responsible for the supervision, control, and safety of all participants during any pool activity through preventative guarding methods. Remains alert with no lapses in consciousness. Sit for extended periods in elevated chair or standing at edge of deck while on duty. Move to various locations, including in and around elevated chair. Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances and communicate swiftly and effectively with emergency personnel over the phone and in person. Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember. Operator as a team with other lifeguards and SCSDB staff as well as independently. Provide supervision and high safety standards during all swimming activities. Administer swim tests, place and care for swim-safe bands. Assist in maintaining cleanliness of the pool, deck, and locker rooms. Test the PH, free chlorine level, and water temperature. Engage in positive manner with students and staff. Know all emergency procedures. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times. Report for duty on time and be prepared to guard. Perform designated tasks in a timely manner. Lifting up to 100 lbs may be required. Working around chemicals may be required. Perform any additional tasks as delegated by the Director or Coordinator for the overall benefit of the SCSDB aquatic area.


Minimum and Additional Requirements


Must hold current Red Cross and/or Lifeguard certificate or comparable national certification. Must be certified in CPR for the Pro Rescuer and First Aid. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to complete any and all required trainings and employee application process as well as any other required certifications as the job progresses. Must be able to make sound decisions in a stressful aquatic environment. Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment with background noise. Must be able to swim 300 continuous yards of freestyle and breast stroke.
