Medication Access Supervisor - McLeod Pharmacy Services

Reporting to the Pharmacy Business Services Corporate Director, the Medication Access Supervisor is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations of the medication access / medication prior authorization team, ensuring exceptional patient care, customer service, and efficient coordination with healthcare providers and insurance entities.

The Medication Access Supervisor will play a crucial role in ensuring access to medications for patients with unique medical needs through leadership of a dedicated medication access team.

Key Responsibilities:

Medication Access Service Development:

  • Oversee the development and management of high-quality pharmacy benefit and medical benefit prior authorization program, ensuring efficient and compliant processes to optimize patient access to necessary medications and treatments.

  • Monitor and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure team productivity, patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction, and compliance goals are met or exceeded.

  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of insurance coverage and prior authorization requirements for medications.

  • Act as a point of escalation for complex cases, addressing patient concerns, insurance challenges, and coordinating solutions with internal departments.

  • Provide leadership and support for medication assistance programs, including eligibility assessments, coordination with pharmaceutical companies, and optimizing patient access to vital medications.

  • Oversee performance of quality assurance and improvement activities, investigating and responding to problems for continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with clinic and revenue cycle leaders to ensure robust program performance, optimizing patient access to medications while maintaining financial sustainability.

  • Design, implement, and optimize workflows between different facets of medication access work, including HER processes, intra-team workflows, and internal/external communication streams.

Management and Oversight:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of medication access team members, ensuring exceptional support to patients and healthcare providers.

  • Interact with technicians, pharmacists, support staff, and others to address and resolve issues impacting service provision.

  • Ensure adherence to departmental, hospital, and regulatory guidelines to provide safe and efficient patient-centered care.

  • Manage the recruitment and onboarding process, including interviewing, orientation, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions as required, while overseeing payroll and task delegation.

  • Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to identify process improvement opportunities, enhance operational efficiency, and contribute to the growth of pharmacy services.

Miscellaneous: 路 Plan and present at quarterly staff meetings, providing relevant training for pharmacy technical and support staff. 路 Manage departmental projects aligned with departmental goals, regulatory compliance, quality enhancement, patient safety, and operational efficiency. 路 Develop project charters, plans, documents, and reports, and assemble project teams in collaboration with pharmacy leadership and staff members. 路 Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications /Training:

  • Minimum of three years of health system or applicable healthcare related experience, required.

  • Prior experience working in a specialty or infusion pharmacy setting, particularly in medication access, prior

  • authorization, or patient access programs, required.

  • Proven experience in a supervisory or team lead role, showcasing strong leadership, communication, and team

  • management skills, preferred.

  • Proficiency in using pharmacy management software, preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations/Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.

  • Baccalaureate or advanced degree, preferred.

  • Completion of an RN or pharmacy technician training program, preferred.

  • Eligible for licensure to practice under applicable discipline in the state of South Carolina, preferred.

  • RN or CPhT or ExCPT and CSPT, preferred.
