Job Responsibilities

Job Purpose:
Under limited supervision, serve as a Criminalist in SLED's Computer Crimes Unit. Complete forensic examinations and conduct analysis of seized electronic devices. Prepare reports and present evidentiary findings as an expert in judicial proceedings. Demonstrate professionalism and willingness to work with supervisors, agents, criminalist, support personnel, the public and the judicial system. Serve as a certified Class III officer through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.Β 

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct examinations: Participate in the forensic examination of sized electronic devices. Examine electronic devices on-scene or in laboratory and obtain supporting information relating to violations or possible violations of state or federal law. Report information; prepare an examinations report that accurately depicts the findings of electronic devices submitted; provide courtroom testimony. Β Propose new or modified analytical procedures to be used by examiners.Β 
  • Support Program Areas: Perform various support tasks related to training, communication, special assignments and other functional areas of responsibility. Attend professional training sessions in order to maintain expertise in the area of digital forensics.Β 
  • Perform Administrative Tasks: Perform related administrative duties as required. Maintain up-to-date case information records in case management system and conduct periodic evidence inventory inspections to ensure evidence is being properly maintained as required by SLED policy.Β 
  • Support Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement: Assist with law enforcement functions by processing, examining and interpreting evidence in a laboratory setting.Β 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.Β 
  • Proficient use on a personal computer and Microsoft Office Software.Β 
  • Above average knowledge of computer operations.
  • Working knowledge of the internet, email and social media.Β 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Secret Clearance.Β 
  • Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing or job functions.Β 
  • Primary work environment consists of working in a laboratory environment Monday-Friday, with some off-site work.Β 
  • Position is subject to periodic emergency call 24-hours, seven days a week.Β 
  • Position requires overnight travel in and out of state.Β 
  • Selected candidate must be available for after hour response to request for service.Β 
  • Must be able to lift items of evidence up to 40 pounds.Β
