General Statement of Job

Β 

The successful candidate should be able to utilize the SC Academic Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts in order to plan innovative and challenging lessons in dance. The candidate should be certified in dance through the SC Department of Education, have a working knowledge of child development and an excellent grasp of content, curriculum, and methods for the instruction of the dance curriculum. The candidate should have the ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory and possess the ability to plan and implement standards-based lessons. The candidate should possess an ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents, as well as have skills in oral and written communications and excellent human relations skills. The candidate should be able to collaborate with related arts teachers as well as regular education teachers.Β The candidate should be able and willing to support extracurricular programs related to dance as needed for the magnet school.Β  In addition, the candidate should be flexible and maintain the ability to travel to a variety of schools within the district.

Responsibility and Authority

Β 

The Dance Instructor will report to the assigned school’s Principal.Β  They will have the responsibility to accomplish assigned duties within district policies, state laws and regulations, and federal laws and regulations as related to the school’s purpose, classroom function, and contact with students and parents. They will be expected to provide after-school time as required for assisting students, consulting with parents and any other essential out-of-school work.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Maintain an awareness of best practices and current research on instruction, instructional technology, and related research that enhances and improves instruction
  2. Participate in collaborative planning with regular education teachers and in team-taught arts-infused lesson plan.
  3. Plan and conduct dance performances throughout the year for parents and the community.
  4. Plan and develop effective strategies to increase student achievement by addressing individual learning differences
  5. Carry out any other duties related to the instructional program as deemed necessary by the Superintendent or his/her designee
  6. Have knowledge regarding curriculum, subject content and developmental needs of students in order to offer appropriate learning experiences
  7. Use data to gauge student progress, and guide student instruction
  8. Communicate with students, faculty, and communityΒ  Β 
  9. Provide a safe, student-centered environment that is educationally stimulating and respectful
  10. Advocate a professional manner and participate in professional development opportunities that promote proficiency in your field
  11. Provide students with activities that deliver calculable results on recognized standards
  12. Ability to work with others
  13. Ability to accept individual differences among children
  14. Good physical and mental health
  15. Ability to pass the Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) requirements
  16. Ability to handle unforeseen situation in accordance with policy
  17. Ability to assist students boarding and departing from school busesΒ 

Responsibilities:

  1. Planning at the beginning of the school year for the organization and sequence of instructional content and preparing for establishing the classroom learning environment
  2. Supervising/monitoring students during lunch, assemblies, related arts, field trips, mainstream classes, recess, etc. as deemed appropriate by the teacher
  3. Insure correct implementation of the students’ IEP goals and objectives
  4. Prepare instructional objectives for lessons taking into consideration the individual students IEP goals and objectives
  5. Clarify the goals of instruction for students
  6. Present new content in a stimulating manner at the appropriate rate and level of difficulty
  7. Manage classroom time in a way to ensure success in goals
  8. Maintain confidentiality ofΒ students; especially regarding student IEP and record information
  9. Assist with discipline procedures for student behavior
  10. MaintainΒ individual records for each student
  11. Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults
  12. Organize instruction to provide a structured environment for learning
  13. Keep lesson plans updated in the case of the need for a substitute
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator(s)
