Manages the day-to-day operations of the Radiological Maintenance and Calibration Laboratory (βRad Labβ) and acts as the SC Emergency Management Divisionβs (SCEMD) Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). Coordinates the annual calibration of, and maintains inventory for, specific State and county radiological instruments in accordance with established state and federal regulations and procedures. Maintains appropriate licensing for the Rad Lab in accordance with state and federal regulation. Coordinates and maintains a statewide contract with a private vendor for the use of approved dosimetry in accordance with state procurement policies. Maintains appropriate plans and procedures for all functions of the Rad Lab, as well as for the emergency distribution of equipment during a radiological emergency. Provides technical assistance and training to the counties and other State agencies on the use, maintenance, and repair of the various radiological detection and monitoring instruments used in preparation for, and response to, a radiological emergency, as necessary or required. Serves as the Training Coordinator for the Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program. Assists the Radiological Emergency Preparedness Coordinators in the execution of exercises. Participates in the Preventative Radiological/Nuclear Detection working group. Responds to multi-hazard emergencies; performs assorted division duties in support of counties or the emergency operations center.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelorβs degree and professional experience in a related field or specific training in physics and radiation. Must be computer literate.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of ionizing radiation and its biological effects and familiarity with state rules and regulations regarding radiation, its uses, exposure limits and license of same. Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. Experience conducting training for small or large groups. South Carolina Certified Emergency Manager certification preferred or will seek to complete within three years. Individual must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. Experience with Microsoft 365 products to include Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
